Lumo homes’ sustainability survey: 79% of respondents consider their landlord to be a sustainable operator – the importance of safety has increased

The majority of respondents to the Lumo homes sustainability survey feel that Lumo is a sustainable or even extremely sustainable landlord. The proportion of respondents who consider their landlord sustainable increased significantly from the previous year, and the importance of safety in housing was emphasised in the residents' responses.

Lumo conducted an annual survey among its residents to find out their views on the sustainability of Lumo living. The aim is to find out how the measures taken during the past year have influenced the residents’ views and what they think is most important in sustainable housing today.

An increasing number of residents consider Lumo homes to be a sustainable operator

More than 2,000 Lumo residents responded to the 2024 sustainability survey, which is roughly the same number as in the previous survey (Lumo homes’ sustainability survey 2023). The majority of respondents this year were from the Helsinki capital region, Tampere, Oulu, Turku and Jyväskylä – the largest cities in Finland, where the operations of Lumo homes are also focused. The respondents were from all age groups and tenancy relationships of different lengths.

In the survey, residents were asked to assess how sustainable a landlord Lumo is. Exactly 79 per cent of the respondents considered Lumo homes to be either a sustainable or an extremely sustainable operator.

"The share of those who consider us a sustainable operator increased by more than 7 per cent from last year. In other words, we've done the right things in accordance with our residents’ wishes," says Elina Ekelund, Sustainability Manager at Lumo Homes.

One of the biggest changes based on the results of the 2023 sustainability survey was Lumo homes becoming more smoke-free. Lumo homes have had smoke-free buildings since 2017, but from June 2024 onwards, all new tenancy agreements have been smoke-free.

Another concrete measure has been communicating about sustainability actions more actively than before.

"We have openly told our residents about the measures we are taking as a landlord, the reforms we have implemented based on feedback, and at the same time reminded the residents of their responsibilities as part of the common good. Sustainability is about actions – ours and the residents'," Ekelund summarises.

Housing safety was perceived as the most important sustainability topic

The priorities of Lumo residents have changed in recent years. Comprehensive waste sorting opportunities have been the most important sustainability theme over the past two years, but this year, security ranked highest at 66.2 per cent. Security here referred to the building’s physical security factors, such as locks and security services. Last year, this option was only ranked third by residents in their list of priorities.

"I understand well that the importance of safe everyday life has grown with the current state of things. Unfortunate situations around the world make people stop and think about what really matters in everyday life – that the home is a good and safe place to be and live," says Ekelund.

"This year, we also added 'A safe and reliable landlord’ as an option in the survey, because we wanted to see how the times are affecting the preferences of residents on the emotional side of things. This statement received 48.8 per cent of the votes and was thus the second most important sustainability theme on the list."

The theme of safety was highlighted in every way in the survey. After this, the indoor environment conditions, location and sorting options of the home ranked the highest.

"In these times and in line with our residents’ wishes, it's most important to us to provide a safe home for all our residents. We will be focusing on this theme in our operational planning for next year," says Ekelund.
