Kojamo chooses Leanheat’s AI solution to control the temperature of 26,000 apartments

Leanheat Oy, a provider of artificial intelligence solutions for controlling district heating, and Kojamo plc, Finland’s largest private housing investment company, have signed an agreement to use Leanheat’s AI-based IoT solution to control the indoor temperature of approximately 26,000 Kojamo-owned apartments. The agreement covers 80 per cent of the housing stock owned by Kojamo, which provides rental apartments under the Lumo and VVO brands. The agreement is the largest in Leanheat’s history.

Temperature and humidity sensors will be installed in Kojamo’s apartments during this autumn. The sensors collect room temperature data to enable the AI-based Leanheat solution to learn the characteristics of each building and adjust the indoor temperature to make it stable and optimised. The solution also analyses fluctuations in humidity. This helps identify deficiencies in ventilation, for example, which can prevent potential negative impacts on tenants.

“Leanheat has been piloted in about 60 of our buildings. Our experiences have been so positive that we have decided to install the solution in 26,000 Lumo homes. Real-time temperature data helps us control heating more accurately and react quickly to any potential problems. Ideally, we can rectify the situation even before the tenant notices any changes in indoor conditions,” says Pasi Kujansuu, Head of Kojamo’s Property Services unit.

“Our cooperation with Kojamo is an important step for us. It is another strong indication of customers’ trust in Leanheat and their perception of Leanheat as a district heating control solution that is mature enough for large scale implementation. This represents the largest agreement we have ever signed. We are ahead of our sales target for the year and, as in the previous financial year, we are set to double our turnover,” says Leanheat CEO Jukka Aho.

Energy savings and better indoor air quality through artificial intelligence

Using predictive artificial intelligence, Leanheat’s solution automatically adjusts heating according to the actual temperature inside the apartments as well as the weather forecast, preventing excessive heating and helping the property owner regulate the balance between apartments more accurately than before. This has a significant impact on improving indoor air quality and making apartments more comfortable for their tenants, while also reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint of buildings. Leanheat typically reduces heating costs by approximately 10 per cent.

Leanheat is the world’s largest IoT solution for district heated buildings. By the end of 2018, the solution will be installed in 100,000 apartments around the world, and the company aims to achieve the milestone of one million apartments by 2022. Leanheat is a fully automated and self-learning system that optimises both individual buildings and entire groups of buildings in real time. It helps district heating companies make more efficient use of energy and reduce their carbon footprint.
