In Lumo homes, you can participate in climate action by compensating for the carbon footprint of heating and testing your own carbon footprint
In our sustainability programme, we commit to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and carbon-neutral energy use at our properties by 2030. We also add responsible housing services as part of our wide range of services. As a new service for Lumo homes, residents can participate in climate action by compensating for the carbon footprint of heating. In addition, Lumo offers everyone a carbon footprint test for assessing their own carbon footprint: https://lumo.fi/carbonfootprinttest. Between 20 and 30 per cent of the carbon footprint of a person living in Finland comes from housing, the most significant contributor to the climate impact of which is heating.
“We continuously strive to improve our energy efficiency. We also want to give the residents of Lumo homes the opportunity to participate in climate action by compensating for the carbon footprint of heating. At the same time, we publish a carbon footprint test both as open to everyone and for the residents of Lumo homes to assess their own carbon footprint. With these new services, we want to continue our efforts to combat climate change throughout our value chain, ”says Niina Turri, Manager, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability at Kojamo.
The carbon footprint test allows you to assess the sustainability of your lifestyle, especially through questions related to housing, consumption and travelling. As a result of the test, you can see your own carbon footprint in proportion to the average Finnish carbon footprint. The carbon footprint test is open to everyone in terms of housing in general and is tailored to the residents of Lumo homes based on their own Lumo home in the My Lumo service. There are tips and services linked to the carbon footprint test that help residents to reduce their own carbon footprint.
The use of renewable energy sources as a form of heating is constantly increasing in Lumo buildings
We are constantly increasing the use of renewable energy sources as a form of heating in Lumo buildings. Currently at all of Lumo buildings, we use fully carbon-neutral hydropower-certified electricity to illuminate common areas and yards, heat the shared saunas, run the washing machines in the washing room and power the ventilation systems. In addition, nearly one hundred Lumo buildings in the capital region are heated by carbon-neutral district heating, electricity or geothermal heating, in other words, renewable energy sources.
We have been developing different energy efficiency practices for many years. The indoor temperature of nearly 28,000 Lumo buildings is controlled with an AI-enabled IoT solution. The solution uses predictive artificial intelligence to automatically adjust the heating of a building according to the actual temperature inside the apartments as well as the weather forecast, optimising the comfort of living and energy consumption.
Our sustainability programme, published in 2021, is based on Kojamo’s strategy and mission to create better urban living. The sustainability programme consists of four sustainability themes focused on the key impacts of operations, the most important goals and the expectations of stakeholders. We will increase the efficiency of our energy consumption by 7.5 per cent by 2025, using 2016 as the baseline (VAETS II). As part of our goal of becoming carbon-neutral, we have joined the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment initiative of the World Green Building Council.
