Kojamo and Alva accelerate the carbon-neutrality of Lumo buildings with demand response for district heating and smart heating optimisation

Kojamo and Alva have agreed on demand response for district heating in more than 40 Lumo buildings in Jyväskylä. The cooperation will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Lumo homes.

Kojamo and Alva-yhtiöt Oy have signed an agreement to optimise the use of district heating in more than 40 Lumo buildings in Jyväskylä through demand response and peak power limitation. The cooperation supports both companies’ sustainability goals.

Demand response improves energy efficiency

With a demand response solution, the heat consumption of the building is adapted to demand without compromising the comfort of living. This reduces the carbon footprint of Lumo buildings, improves resource efficiency and generates savings.

“With the help of demand response, we will cut the carbon emissions per apartment of Kojamo’s entire property portfolio by approximately five per cent. This is a significant step on our journey towards carbon-neutral energy consumption in our buildings by 2030,” says Pasi Kujansuu, Director of Property Services at Kojamo.

Demand response makes district heating production even more cost and resource-efficient. At the same time, it supports the stabilisation of the price development of district heating. Smart peak power limitation cuts consumption peaks, which reduces properties’ costs.

This cooperation is a great example of a win-win-win situation achieved through the cooperation of three different operators.”

The demand response is guided by Ouman Oy’s solutions. Ouman is Kojamo’s long-term partner in the production of energy optimisation solutions for properties.

“At Alva, we have actively developed demand response and energy optimisation in recent years. For us, Kojamo is the most significant individual real estate owner with whom we implement demand response services. This cooperation is a great example of a win-win-win situation achieved through the cooperation of three different operators,” says Elias Tamminen, heating specialist at Alva.

Smart heating optimisation reduces emissions

The service package also includes remote monitoring and optimisation of the living conditions of Lumo homes based on the temperature data of the apartments and weather forecasts. With smart control, the indoor temperature remains more even, which increases the comfort of living and reduces energy consumption.

The cooperation will reduce Kojamo’s carbon dioxide emissions from Lumo buildings in Jyväskylä by approximately 1,118 tonnes per year, which corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 250 households.

Kojamo’s and Alva’s cooperation shows how innovative energy solutions support companies’ sustainability goals and bring concrete benefits to the environment and residents alike.
