An apartment building constructed for VVO Group by Fira, a pioneer in construction industry, has won the Finnish Concrete Structure Award. The winning site constructed in Rastila, Helsinki, had its innovative solutions developed in Big Room cooperation between the parties of the construction project. Betoniteollisuus ry awards the best concrete construction site every year.
The 11-floor residential apartment building constructed by Fira is situated in Retkeilijänkatu 1, in the vicinity of the Rastila metro station. The limited size of the plot and the height of the building meant that new types of solutions had to be devised. A new, innovative balcony solution was one of the inventions of the Big Room project, enabling the cost-efficient fitting of balconies even in a narrow plot. In addition to Fira and VVO Group, the Big Room project was joined by Parma, Konkret Architects Ltd. and Sweco Structural Engineering.
The objective of the design team in the development of structural solutions was increasing the grade of prefabrication. Constructing the balconies in the apartment building situated in a narrow plot would have been expensive and difficult with the use of the usual solutions. The dice-like protruding balcony enabled the balconies to be freely placed onto the facade of the apartment building. In addition, technological systems had been preinstalled to the framework structure of the target at the element production facility, the sanitary facilities were implemented with technical slabs and the vertical structures of the building technology were placed within a technical wall. Thanks to these solutions, the work steps carried out at the work site were significantly reduced.
– A successful project and a fantastic result, summarises Unit Director Tommi Parikka from VVO Group. The objectives set by the developer were successfully realised in the Big Room cooperation. The apartments of Retkeilijänkatu 1 follow our strategy; they are small apartments at the heart of excellent traffic connections and services. The 82 new Lumo rental apartments will be completed on 1 February 2017.
– The Big Room cooperation increased our understanding on different needs and clarified our mutual goal. In the Retkeilijänkatu project, we also comprehensively utilised data modelling both in the design and the work site stage. This enabled us to ensure the functionality of the plans and carry out high-quality production design. The Concrete Structure Award granted to the project due to extensive and successful cooperation is an acknowledgement of which the entire cooperation team can be proud, says Fira Project Manager Ville Sireni.
Betoniteollisuus ry grants the Concrete Structure Award on the basis of an annual contest to a construction target that best represents Finnish concrete construction. The purpose of the contest is to advance and promote Finnish concrete architecture, technology and construction. The contest has been organised since 1970.
