Demand for charging stations increases as electric cars become more common

The number of electric cars is growing rapidly in Finland, and this is also reflected in the everyday life of Lumo residents. The charging infrastructure of Lumo buildings has been developed in line with residents’ wishes, and the use of charging stations has increased significantly in recent years.

According to Statistics Finland, the number of electric cars in Finland has increased rapidly over the last few years. The increasing use of electric cars is supported by a developing charging network, among other things. Lumo contributes to the electrification of the car stock by building its own charging stations in the parking lots of Lumo buildings and nearby parking facilities, making residents’ daily lives easier.

Housing services are developed based on needs

The needs of residents strongly guide the types of services developed at Lumo Homes. The addition of charging stations is a good example of how the comfort of living is being improved and housing services are adapted to current needs.

Lumo introduced the first charging stations for its residents in 2020. Today, there are nearly 1,700 charging stations available to Lumo residents. Charging stations are added in accordance with the residents’ needs and the technical opportunities of the properties.

“At best, we have delivered a charging station to the resident’s parking lot in less than a week at the resident’s request,” says Pasi Kujansuu, Director of Property Services at Lumo Homes.

The use of charging stations at Lumo homes has increased significantly in recent years. The utilisation rate of charging stations is currently around 50% of their full potential. This year, by the end of August 2025, approximately 400 megawatt hours of electricity had been used for charging at the charging stations of Lumo homes. This corresponds to an estimated two million kilometres of driving, or almost 50 trips around the world. These journeys have been made completely emission-free, as the electricity from the charging stations is carbon-neutral, provable with a certificate of origin.

“Electric transportation has become part of the everyday life of many of our residents, and we want to enable a smooth everyday life for our residents with our own charging stations,” Kujansuu goes on to say.

The need for charging stations increases with the number of electric cars

According to news from the automotive industry, there were already about 291,000 plug-in electric cars on the roads at the beginning of 2025, of which more than 124,000 were fully electric cars and about 167,000 were plug-in hybrids. Plug-in electric cars already represent over 10% of the car stock in Finland. Compared to the beginning of 2024, the number of plug-in electric cars increased by approximately 31%, and the number of fully electric cars increased by approximately 41%.

According to the forecasts, the number of plug-in electric cars in Finland could reach 800,000 by 2030, of which approximately 500,000 would be fully electric cars. This would mean that the share of plug-in electric cars in the passenger car stock would increase to approximately 27 per cent and the share of fully electric cars to approximately 18 per cent.

“The increase in the number of electric cars and the need to develop charging infrastructure go hand in hand. The need for charging stations in the parking lots of homes is growing, and we are doing our best to meet this need while also enabling sustainable transport for our residents,” says Kujansuu.
